New Joint Report: Closing the 'Quantum Divide' with UNESCO
We’re excited to share a new joint report published in collaboration with UNESCO that examines a critical hurdle for our field: the growing “quantum divide.”
The paper, “The Quantum moment: a global report; Outcomes of the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology,” highlights a stark reality: one in three researchers globally has no access to quantum research facilities.
Why This Matters
For the UF community, this data reinforces why our work in open-source and distributed research is so vital. If we don’t actively lower the barriers to entry, the benefits of quantum tech will remain concentrated in just a few regions. The report calls for:
- Global Infrastructure Access: Reducing the hardware bottleneck for researchers in the Global South.
- Open Source as an Equalizer: Using open-source software to provide the tools necessary for world-class research, regardless of local funding.
- SDG Alignment: Ensuring quantum advancements are tied to the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Expanding the global pool of quantum contributors is the only way to ensure the technology benefits everyone. Let’s keep building.
